I was diagnosed with melanoma in December 2016. During my annual physical, my primary care doctor noticed two spots he thought should be checked. Luckily I didn’t brush it off and made an appointment with my dermatologist.
They biopsied both spots, and sure enough one came back as melanoma. It was a very scary time (all amidst planning our wedding), but luckily it was caught fairly early, so my treatment was just the surgery. I’ve also had x-rays and bloodwork done every year as well.
I’ve always been fair skinned and burn easily. Now I make sure to wear long sleeves and have a hat available at all times. Also, I load up on the sunscreen as well!
My wife ran the Outpacing Melanoma 5K that first year, and I’ve been running it since the year after. We’ve also added more family members to the team every year as well. I’m so thankful for my family and friends for their support!
My diagnosis has led others I know to schedule an exam and get checked, which as everyone knows is so important!
